It just won’t stop beating…
Sydney sat directly in front of me and held out her hand in my direction.
“Hi I’m Sydney. You are?” Her smile was mesmerizing to say the least. A friendly smile but i can sense a little bit of playfulness with a dash of sexiness in between.
“I–, I–”
Damn! What the heck is wrong with me? Get a hold of yourself Liam!
I could feel myself perspiring. Little droplets of sweat forming just above my upper lip. My hearts just keeps on beating faster and faster as I reached out my hand to hers. The moment our hands touched, I felt a jolt in the stomach and automatically held my breath. Somehow I managed to mutter the words, “I Liam,” followed by an awkward smile.
“I Liam” was the best thing I could come up with? Very smooth I know…but like I said before; I’m just not good with people, period! Especially with a girl that for some unknown reason just gave me that fireworks feeling that you should have kissing someone you love with a simple handshake.
Maybe its her beauty. Just a shade darker than her sister, she had an oval face, high cheekbones, slightly pointed nose with light brown eyes. One side of her straight shoulder length hair was neatly tucked behind her ear. Her lips was a deep red tinged by pink lip gloss.
No it’s not just her beauty. There was something else, but i just couldn’t put a finger on it.
As i analyzed her perfect features, i realised that i was still holding her hand. I quickly let go and she continued to introduce herself to Derrick, as if she was oblivious to the fact that i held her hand for what seemed to be an eternity.
I mustered the courage to speak, trying to keep my tone as neutral as possible.
“So Sydney, where are you studying?” A typical and boring question I know but its the only question I could think of in the condition I’m in.
“Oakwood College at Precinct Nine. I’m taking Financial Economics there. How about you?”
“Really? I go to Oakwood University at Precinct Two. Taking Financial Engineering. Oakwood College is like a sister college to Oakwood university right?”
“Yes it is. But I’m finishing my diploma soon. Then off to Melbourne for my degree.”
“Melbourne as in Australia? Wow…but why not go to Sydney, cause you know, your name is Sydney.” I let out a small zany laugh. It was a pathetic attempt at making a joke.
She laughed at my feeble joke which sounded genuine, but i have a feeling she’s heard that joke a thousand times.
“Nah…ever since i was small I’ve always wanted to study at Melbourne University.” She smiled as if she was reminiscing a good childhood memory.
“Ahh…i see,” was the only reply i could think of. Then there was silence between us. My brain apparently has lost the ability to continue a good conversation. There was so many things i could have said or asked. Tell me about your childhood. Where did you get your lovely watch. Why did the woodchuck chuck wood? Just anything. But there i was, sitting silently as my brother chats away with Rosey on office gossip. I looked at Sydney who seems to be listening to Derrick’s and Rosey’s conversation. To Sydney’s right was Ariana busy texting on her phone. I didn’t notice her sitting there before.
Then came a group of people through the door. It was the people Derrick invited along with a few of Ariana’s friends. Being a good hostess, Rosey introduced everyone but one person stood out. A guy who asked to be called Check, one of Ariana’s friends. Wearing a black tee which seemed two sizes too small for his kind-of-buff body and washed out blue Levis jeans, he was shorter a couple of inches shorter than me. With a chiseled jaw and spiky jet black hair, he was good looking. He reminds me of a warewolf character in one of those tv series.
If you’re wondering why I said he stood out, well its not of his physical appearance, but his apparent interest in Sydney. He hugged her as if he was her boyfriend when he came and only talked to her after the introductions. I know for a fact that Sydney was single so he can’t be her boyfriend but Sydney has shifted all her focus on him. Why didn’t i continue talking to her, and why the hell did that douchebag has to come? I got up and walked to the stone bench at the garden.
I need a smoke.
